Protection

Homa Bay County remains the leading in Kenya in HIV infections with prevalence rates that are well beyond WHO recommended thresholds. Consequently, most children are orphaned and have immense protection concerns. Gender-based violence remains a major course for concern because of polygamy and poor socio-economic status of most family. NEWI is ensuring the educational, psychosocial and physical needs of these children are addressed through a number of interventions;

  • Creation of child friendly spaces where these children are able to play with minimal constraints
  • Linkage of orphaned children to their relatives or existing orphanages and following up to ensure they are well taken care of.
  • Active case finding and supporting of HIV positive women or those widowed as a result of HIV to set up their own income generating projects as a way of empowering them economically.

Identification of cases of gender-based violence through trained community-based case workers are referring trauma cases to health facilities for specialized care and psychosocial support ad linking them with existing legal structures.
